I am passionate about personal growth and our ability to learn and change. I don’t always follow the status quo and think of myself as a bit of a contrarian. I am presenting here what has worked for me. I hope it will work for you as well.
Life gives you some difficult “gifts.” It certainly did that for me!
Tragedy struck when my life-partner of 34 years died suddenly and without warning. He was only 59 years old and I was devastated. I was alone, with no idea what to do next. He had been my best friend, my lover, my business partner, my life. We had no kids and I was not close to my family. For two years I just went through the motions of living.
Finally, I came to Colorado for a vacation and suddenly understood the line from John Denver’s song; I came “home to a place I’d never been before.” So after a string of miracles (more about that later), I moved here from New York City and started over.
I had been overweight for most of my life. I finally realized that most of what I learned about losing weight was just wrong. It was temporary, and it caused me to gain even more weight each time I went on another “diet.”
After that, I gave up. It wasn’t worth the fight. Dieting didn’t work. It ruined my metabolism and I felt like a beached whale. For the next decade or two, I ate what I wanted. And I wanted a lot. Food was my new “best friend.” I was addicted to food, and to sugar. Fast food was everywhere in New York: Chinese, Indian, Burgers and Fries, Ice Cream, Pastries, Cakes and Cookies, anything and everything, every hour of the day and night. Everywhere.
As time went by, I couldn’t ignore it anymore. I wouldn’t do anything that required physical exertion. I was no longer in my twenties, but I was old before my time. Nothing worked, at least not for long. But I knew there had to be an answer. I kept searching.
Struggling with counting calories and endless exercise, only to gain back more than you’ve lost, is disheartening and depressing. I found out that I could lose those extra pounds no matter what my age, without being hungry or unsatisfied. I did it.
I don’t want you to have to experiment for 20 years, as I did.
